History lesson time.On July 26, 1948, which was also an election year, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, ending racial segregation in the military. Guess how popular his decision was?
A Gallup Poll conducted that year showed 63% of military personnel opposing Truman's plan to desegregate. They even passed around a survey about how the Caucasian enlisted personnel would feel about having non-whites in their face all day, showering next to them and stuff. Most weren't happy about the prospect. Truman pretended that survey never happened and did what he knew was right.
Currently 78% of the general public supports repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
So, by all means, President Obama, let this drag on indefinitely. We'll just be patient until you and Congress and the Pentagon feel good about it.
